Welcome to Year 5 & 6 Class

Our Aims

In year 5&6, we aim to meet the needs of every child. We aim to provide varied and challenging learning experiences in order to help pupils develop lively inquiring minds, to be creative and to expand their intellectual capacities.

We aim to develop a child’s independence and personal responsibility in the learning situation, so that with encouragement they become self-disciplined, well motivated and best equipped towards fulfilling their individual potential.

We aim to provide a sound foundation in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and to foster attitudes towards these disciplines so that pupils can use these skills efficiently and effectively.

We aim to provide opportunities so that children can gain a wide knowledge, experience and understanding across the curriculum. In doing so they will develop, use and apply language, mathematical and creative skills, which will enable them to gain and understand new information.

A little About Our Class

In Years 5&6, children receive a daily literacy lesson where they are able to explore and develop their reading, writing (including handwriting, grammar, punctuation and spelling) along with speaking & listening skills.

All children will receive a daily Maths lesson in which the focus with be number work and calculations. The curriculum also build in units to allow the children to work with measure, data handling, shape and space, mental arithmetic and mathematical investigations where children are encouraged to apply all of their knowledge to problem solve. Where possible the Maths curriculum is also linked to the parents who are encouraged to continue to support their children’s mathematical agility at home by practicing number and tables each night.

Science is delivered as part of our topic sessions in the afternoon and children will receive the equivalent time of one lesson per week, although The science topics are delivered on a two-year rolling programme and in Years 5&6 topics include: Light & Shadow, Electricity, Rocks & Soils, Changing State, Materials and their Properties, Habitats, Friction, Sound & Light, Space, Drugs & Alcohol, Sex Education and Circuits and Forces.

The use of ICT underpins a lot of the curriculum and children are encouraged to access ICT to support their learning each day. Children also have a weekly timetabled ICT lesson to develop appropriate skills such as safe internet practices. Children have access to a our HWB suite which is password protected and monitored by the school.

P.E. & Games

Fitness is extremely important to us in years 5&6. Children have timetabled Physical Education lessons each week in which they enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical activity. The main areas covered focus on gymnastics, games, swimming, athletics, and dance, as well as running a daily mile! Each year we also hold a Sports Day where children take part in a range of athletic activities and compete with their house teams. We have recently started running the local ‘Parkrun’ where parents and children run 5k on a Saturday morning.

Foundation Subjects

The foundation subjects include History, Geography, Art, Design Technology and Music. These are taught through the topic the children are studying and are carefully designed to allow the children to develop key skills and apply them independently to a range of contexts.
